About Sean Payton's Move to Dallas

As I was writing my last blog and reliving the 2009 season, the realization that it won't ever happen again like that was so thick you could slice it. There is something magical about the Sean Payton/Drew Brees combination. They have been so in-sync that it's hard to imagine any other coach coming in and being that tight with Drew. I think of all the things that unsettle me about Payton's eventual leaving, that is the most unsettling. But I really hope that Payton stays for the rest of Drew's career. Unless he's really just ready to call it a day coaching I can't see him ever finding that kind of connection with any other QB.

I think that the shock of the news of Payton's move to Dallas is extra hard right now because of the timing. We just watched a Saints-less Super Bowl and that was hard enough. Now we are faced with the questions lurking in the back of our minds about when will Payton leave. It makes us all insecure at a time when we all want and need reassurance that all things will be back to business as usual next season so we can put this one behind us.

And insecurity is something of which longtime Saints fans have had our fill over many angst-filled decades. The last thing we thought we'd be tasting right now is the all-too-familiar taste of insecurity and doubt. I think that's why it hurts so much right now. It's not what we know, it's what we don't know that's killing us.
